SHOPPERS at Tesco stores will this weekend be asked to ensure that every little helps by making donations to local foodbanks.
The twice-yearly Neighbourhood Food Collection will take place in all large Tesco branches, including the Finchampstead Road store in Wokingham.
On entering the store, shoppers are given a foodbank shopping list to use while shopping. They add the items to their baskets and then donate them to volunteers on the way out.
Tesco then tops up the donated food by an additional 30%.
Last year, Wokingham residents donated 1,200kgs (that’s 1.2 tonnes) of food and £120 in cash and organisers are hoping this year’s appeal will be even bigger. The collection runs in stores until Saturday.
David Atkinson, chair of the Wokingham Foodbank in Rose Street, said: “The supermarket weekends are an important part of our collections and ensure that we have enough food to feed those who, for whatever reason, cannot feed themselves and their families.”
