AS LOCAL MP Theresa May fought for her political life over Brexit earlier this week, Wokingham residents took to the streets to show their views on the current situation.
Last week, the Maidenhead MP attempted to sell her Brexit deal by saying it was the only one that Parliament could vote on.
However, this changed on Monday as she stood up in the Houses of Parliament and announced that she would go back to Europe and seek changes to the deal.
This she did on Tuesday, before coming home to face a no confidence vote from Conservative MPs. At least 48 of them had sent letters confirming this to the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Graham Brady.
The vote was due to take place after The Wokingham Paper went to press: a vote that she went on to win.
On Saturday, members of Berkshire For Europe took to Wokingham town centre to invite shoppers to take part in an informal poll, which once again revealed that Wokingham residents overwhelmingly want to stay in the European Union.
Vanessa Rogers said it was an extremely successful event.
“The mood on the street two years ago was very different from today’,” she added. “Then it was just – ‘The vote has been taken, just get on with it’.
“Now people have got stronger and are fighting and queuing to put their stickers on the Brexitomoter – amazing!
“Of course, we got a few angry Leavers who, irresponsibly want a ‘No Deal’ Brexit which would be an absolute disaster, but a few who were very happy to good-naturedly argue their case.
“The majority just wanted to put their stickers on ‘Stay in the EU’ and wanted ‘A People’s Vote’. “It was so heartening.”
