THE organiser of Wokingham’s half marathon has been given a special mayor’s award in recognition of his service to the borough.
Peter Evans, who retired this year along with his wife Barbara and the organising committee of the annual race, has been recognised by Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Rob Stanton for his services to the voluntary sector and sport in the Wokingham borough.
He has been in the role since 1984, and in that time raised thousands for local charities and good causes.
Mr Evans is also chairman of the Wokingham Borough Sports Sponsorship Fund, which gives grants to youngsters who have excelled at sport, but not to the level where they are able to receive funding from national bodies.
Wokingham Borough Mayor Cllr Rob Stanton – who steps down tonight – said: “After more than 30 years of organising the popular Wokingham half-marathon, Peter had stepped down from his duties. It was a pleasure in my final month as Mayor to present him with a Mayor’s Award.
“I would like to personally take this opportunity to thank him for everything he has done to encourage and support others. It is a fitting award for him.”
