THE deputy leader of Wokingham Borough Council has resigned.
Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner sent a letter of resignation this morning.
He will become a backbencher, but there are rumours that
there will be a leadership election among the Wokingham Conservative group next week and his resignation means that he would be a front runner for any such contest.
Speaking to The Wokingham Paper, Cllr McGhee-Sumner said: “I have stepped down from my role as deputy leader.
“I disgree with the direction of travel under the leader and felt it was time to move on.
“I will become a backbencher. It’s sad to do this, I’ve been on the Executive since 2010 and I never thought it would end like this.”
Cllr McGhee-Sumner added that he intended to be an active backbencher, but as to his future plans, he said: “I’ll have to see what other backbenchers would like to see happen.”
Wokingham Borough Council’s Conservative team have been contacted for a comment.
Cllr McGhee-Sumner is also currently the mayor of Wokingham Town Council, his role is not affected by this resignation.
