Theresa May has met with the Queen and been invited to form a new Government.
She has accepted and is now the UK’s new Prime Minister, succeeding David Cameron who resigned just after 5pm tonight.
A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen received in audience the Right Honourable Theresa May MP this evening and requested her to form a new Administration.
“The Right Honourable Theresa May accepted Her Majesty’s offer and Kissed Hands upon her appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
Mrs May will go from Buckingham Palace, where the Queen granted her an audience, to Number 10 Downing Street.
We are expecting her to make a statement shortly.
