CAMPAIGNERS pushing for a second referendum on Brexit once again took to Wokingham town centre’s streets to canvass the views of shoppers.
On Saturday, members of the People’s Vote campaign asked four questions.
On whether Article 50 – the act that makes the UK leave the European Union – should be delayed to allow a better deal to be negotiated, the majority of respondents said yes.
The survey also found that people didn’t want to leave the European Union on March 29 without a deal, and some respondents were happy with it. Only one person responding didn’t know.
Another question asked if people would support a ‘soft Brexit’, sometimes known as Norway Plus. Most respondents said no, although a good number of people said that they would be OK with it and there were also a lot of don’t knows.
The final question was whether there should be a second referendum with an option to remain in place. The vast majority of people placed their sticker in the yes box – more than 60 people wanted a People’s Vote, compared to just 12 people who didn’t. Only one person said they didn’t know what they wanted.
Vanessa Rogers, from Berkshire in Europe, which organised the canvass, said: “We had new questions and the results indicating that people in Wokingham are not happy with what is going on in Westminster.
“The stickers speak for themselves: Support is clear for a People’s Vote with an option to Remain.”
She added that it felt like it was the older generation who supported leaving the European Union, while younger families and people were “very supportive of remaining”.
Berkshire in Europe is a pan-political organisation made up of local residents who want to see the UK remain in the European Union.
