ALMOST 12,000 local residents – at the time of writing – had added their voice to a petition set up aimed at keeping the UK in the European Union.
After last night’s television address in which Maidenhead MP Theresa May said that she was on the side of the British public who wanted to get a resolution to Brexit, more than 1.5 million people have signed a petition calling on Parliament to revoke Article 50 – a law that means Britain would leave the EU on March 29.
Today, many on social media have said that Theresa May didn’t speak for them.
One said: “She has refused to speak for 48% of the U.K. She has refused to acknowledge suggestions from other Parties (not you, DUP). She has blamed everyone but herself.”
Others called her a disgrace, or more fulsome terms unsuitable for a family newspaper.
The petition to revoke Article 50 includes a breakdown of how many people have voted in each constituency.
- Reading East 3,828
- Wokingham 3,130
- Maidenhead 2,816
- Bracknell 2,123
Wokingham borough’s boundaries means it has four MPs: Theresa May’s Maidenhead constituency includes parts of Woodley, Sonning, Twyford, Ruscombe and Wargrave, Sir John Redwood’s Wokingham constituency also includes parts of West Berkshire, Matt Rodda’s Reading East includes parts of Earley and Woodley and Dr Phillip Lee’s Bracknell constituency includes parts of Finchampstead and Wokingham Without.
Both Theresa May and Sir John are pushing for Brexit, while Dr Lee and Matt Rodda want a second referendum.
Wokingham borough voted to remain in the 2016 referendum, as did Reading borough and West Berkshire. Bracknell was the only one to vote leave.
Sir John Redwood, MP for Wokingham, pointed out in his blog that a poll shows just 14% support for Mrs May’s Withdrawal Agreement.
He added in another blog post written ahead of her statement: “The referendum result must be fully implemented on 29 March 2019 as the law states. Mrs May lost the support of 200 Conservative MPs when she proposed a delay in Brexit in Parliament last week. The EU can see from that vote she does not even speak for her own governing party when she asks for a delay. She cannot tell us how long a delay or why.”
Yesterday morning, Dr Phillip Lee, MP for Bracknell, said: “Our country needs statesmanship not weak brinkmanship. When will @theresa_may learn to stop caving in to the extreme Brexiteers. Hers is a bad deal. Threats, deadlines and cliff edges don’t make it better. I won’t vote for it unless people have the #RightToVote in a #FinalSay”

And Matt Rodda, the MP for Reading East, said in a tweet: “We knew Theresa May’s Brexit strategy was total chaos, but this really beggars belief.”
