A FESTIVE mix-up saw shoppers face the prospect of a Christmas dinner without a turkey – after pre-order system at a Wokingham supermarket appeared to fail. But staff at Waitrose worked hard ensured that there were enough birds to go round.
One of the affected shoppers said that it was “chaos” on Christmas Eve as customers at the Rectory Road store battled to get the centrepiece for their Christmas dinners.
But a spokesperson for the supermarket said that there had been no problem with the supply of turkeys and all customers got what they had ordered … or better, as one reader confirmed.
The affected shopper told The Wokingham Paper: “It’s a turkey crisis at Waitrose Wokingham: Customer orders were not available to collect.
“We turned up and joined the queue, and could hear it all kicking off ahead of us. We just felt sorry for the staff.
“There were lots of frazzled staff and angry customers.”
It was not all bad news though – the family were able to get a turkey from another supermarket.
“My wife went to Tesco who had what we wanted for £19 instead of the £50 we were going to pay!”
Another customer left a message on The Wokingham Paper’s Facebook page, saying: “Ours was not there (mild panic) but the lovely people found us an alternative. Free upgrade to Organic too.”
A Waitrose spokesperson said: “There’s [been] good availability.
“We are very sorry if any customer is unhappy. However we’ve had no issues with fulfilling orders in Wokingham.”
