WOODLEY Town Council is once again the parish with the highest council tax precept: its residents will still pay £106.71 on top of their Wokingham Borough Council Band D rate.
Although there is no change over last year, it is still significantly more than residents of Swallowfield will pay. Their parish precept is also unchanged at just £19.19, the lowest in the borough.
Parish and town councils are allowed to set a precept – a council tax that Wokingham Borough Council collects on their behalf – to pay for local services. In Woodley that includes running Woodford Park, while in Wokingham it includes events such as the International Street Concert.
The average parish precept for 2019/20 is £62.40, an average rise of 3.15% over the previous financial year. Seven parishes/town councils ask their residents to pay more than this, but the remaining 10 parish/town councils request smaller amounts.
The largest increase is in Winnersh, where residents are being asked to pay 17.60% more over the 2018 rate: £28.36 to £33.35 a year.
And residents in Ruscombe will have a little more in their pockets as the precept is proposed to decrease by 5.39%: £71.46 goes down to £67.61.
The Wokingham Borough Council share of the council tax for a Band D property in the 2019/20 year would be £1,483.93, Thames Valley Police are asking for £24 per year.
The decision will be made at a full council meeting to be held at Shute End on Thursday, February 21.
