NEW benches have been installed in Market Place, and to celebrate Wokingham Town Mayor invited people to afternoon tea.
Last week, Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner welcomed families for the special reception, so that they could place their commemorative plaques on new benches around the Town Hall.
Cllr McGhee-Sumner said that he was very interested to hear the reasons behind families so kindly donating their benches and shared with his guests what enjoyment people will gain from being able to use them.
Wokingham Town Council said that the Town Hall has for many years benefitted from benches around its walls and these have largely been donated by families who wanted to remember a loved one.
Some individuals who are remembered served as Mayors in the Town such as Alderman Stanley Bowyer and Ian Crail.
John Bingham is remembered for his huge range of voluntary work.
The new benches have been chosen to complement the refurbished Market Place and each family fixed their new plaque to their loved one’s bench.
The previous benches are being refurbished and placed in a park of the family’s choice together with its plaque, so further benefit will be gained in the town’s parks and open spaces.
Mayor Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner said: “I was very pleased to be able to welcome the families of those who have benches to remember a loved one and their involvement and contribution to Wokingham.
“Memories varied, from those who had served as Mayor through to others who loved enjoying the sunshine and town life from a seat in front of the Town Hall.
“I thank all the families for donating their benches and know that they will be much enjoyed by everyone who comes into town; they certainly complement the new Market Place very well, making it an inviting place to spend time.”
