YOUNGSTERS interested in getting outside into the fresh air were given the opportunity to try their hand at fishing at a special community fundraising event last weekend.
Local anglers at Redlands Lake, off Whistley Mill Lane, near Twyford, invited youngsters along to learn the basics of casting a line, hooking bait and reeling in fish at the outdoors weekend.
The event was also raising money for the Lilly-May Page Foundation through a raffle held in conjunction with local companies The Carp Shack and Woodley Tackle Box.
Organiser David Tainton said: “We have raised around £600-700 for the charity through the raffle, and had about 20 youngsters come along to take part.
“We held the day to encourage young kids to get outside and try fishing. We started them out on the training lake where we take them through all the steps, and then move them over to the river. It’s a nice way to get them away from the computer and mobile screens for a while.
“We always choose a charity to support through these fishing weekends, but they are usually charities which we have no connection with, so we decided this year to choose the Lilly-May Page Trust as it is a local charity that is making a real difference in the community.”
