Today, the cost of a litre of unleaded fell under £1 for the first time for six years.
Asda announced a special Black Friday weekend offer, seeing the cost per litre fall to 99.7p – down from its previous low price of 103.7p. All Asda petrol stores have a national fuel cap, which means that every one of its filling stations will cost no more than 99.7p a litre. And that includes the Lower Earley branch.
The deal is only on until Sunday – prices go back up on Monday to 103.7p for a litre of unleaded and 106.7p for diesel.
Asda’s president and CEO Andy Clarke said: “The Chancellor’s freeze on fuel duty is what our customers were hoping for but it doesn’t look like it will be long lived. We’re adding a further boost by investing in a three day fuel price drop meaning drivers can now benefit from fuel as low as 99.7ppl in the crucial run-up to the festive period.
“Our commitment is to keep prices as low as possible for drivers.”
Even at these prices, the Asda Lower Earley branch remains the cheapest place in Wokingham borough to fill up. The supermarket said today that its usual average price is up to 6p per litre cheaper at the pump than some big petrol retailers – and that’s something we saw on our visits to Wokingham petrol stations today.
The BP garage opposite Asda was selling a litre of unleaded for 102.9p tonight.
Elsewhere, the Shell in Shinfield was at 106.9p per litre of unleaded.
Just on the border between Wokingham and Earley is the BP garage at the Three Tuns crossroads. The Wokingham Road branch was selling a litre of unleaded at 106.9p today, diesel was at 110.9p a litre.
The next BP garage on the Wokingham Road is at the Loddon Bridge roundabout, opposite the George and Dragon pub.
Today it was selling unleaded for 107.9p a litre and diesel for 109.9p a litre.
The same price could be found at the Shell garage at Coppid Beech roundabout in Binfield.
Then, when you cross over the roundabout you start to see fuel prices shoot up.
The BP on Reading Road and Shell stations on Reading Road and London Road were today selling a litre of unleaded for 109.9p a litre and diesel for 112.9p a litre. That’s more than 10p a litre more expensive for unleaded than Asda in Lower Earley and still more expensive than garages just a short drive away.
Even when Asda’s prices go back up on Monday, the filling stations in Wokingham will be more expensive, unless there’s some price drops over the weekend.
