TOM VOOGHT scored two tries as Redingensians beat the weather to clinch a bonus-point victory over Wimbledon.
With Old Bath Road covered in snow, the match was moved to Maidenhead’s artificial surface and it proved to be one of the only rugby fixtures to take place all weekend.
On paper it should have been a fairly straightforward victory for Rams against a struggling Wimbledon side, but they were made to work in difficult conditions before eventually triumphing 24-15 to move up to third in the table.
“As one of the only games to be played in National 2 South due to the harsh conditions, it’s down to the monumental effort from the management and volunteers to get this game on,” said Rams head coach Seb Reynolds.
“Wimbledon had a very strong side out and we knew exactly how dangerous they could be.
“I felt the way our boys dealt with them with good set pieces, a good defensive foundation and some clinical attacking play was really great to watch.”
Wimbledon dominated possession during the early stages, but could only put three points on the board.
As for Redingensians, they looked dangerous in attack but could not put the finishing touches to some nice moves.
But they did bag the only try of the first half with Joe Duffelen bursting through and popping the ball to Conor Corrigan, who in turn moved it onto Connor Stapley to run in under the posts.
The second half began in a similar fashion until Wimbledon received a yellow card, which opened the game up.
And the home side took advantage immediately with Oli Cole going over after taking the ball at the back of the scrum.
Rams continued to push forwards and pulled clear with two Vooght tries and despite a late Wimbledon resurgence, the home side closed out the five-point victory.
