A ROUND of applause.
That’s what the executive member for children’s services at Wokingham Borough Council wants to give pupils who received their GCSEs today.
“I can only applaud GCSE students across Wokingham borough for another set of stellar results,” said Cllr UllaKarin Clark, executive member for children’s services.
“Following on from the success of our A-level students last week, our GCSE students showed Wokingham Borough’s young people continue to stand above the national average in exam performance.”
More than 1,700 teenagers across the borough collected results today, and Cllr Clark said that results were above the national average.
In all, 81.8% passed English with Grade 4 or higher (the equivalent of a C grade pass), compared to the national average of 61.8%. And in maths, the average was 78.7% achieving Grade 4 or higher, compared to 59.6% nationally. In total, 74.4% – almost three-quarters – of pupils achieved Grade 4 or higher in both English and maths.
The results come in the second year of the new grading system for GCSEs, seeing A-G grades replaced with 9 to 1, with the higher number representing the top scores.
Cllr Clark said: “These fantastic results show the culmination of the dedication and determination by these students, supported by their parents and teaching staff across the borough. Teachers have guided our young people through the exams period and done their utmost to ensure they were ready to sit these challenging exams.
“Sitting any exam is always a stressful experience and I would like to thank all the staff in our schools, teachers and beyond, for helping these students perform at their best. Our teachers should be proud of what they have helped these young people achieve.”
