Hawkedon Primary School took part in Comic Relief last week by organising multiple events throughout the day to raise money.
Nikki Gladwin-Stride, extended services manager, said she was involved in putting a full schedule of activities on for the children including a whole-school bake off challenge.
Teachers started the bake-off during morning assemblies, where they had to bake their classroom cakes while being handcuffed to the teachers next to them – they were also made to wear ‘fun’ hats including a clowns tophat, fez and a Christmas turkey.
Despite one of the teachers forward thinking to bring along an electric whisk, not all of the cakes went to plan, with one cake ending up clumpy and another baking tin falling through, leaving a gooey mess on the table.
This all added to the fun, and the children were then able to help decorate the cakes in the afternoon, ready to be judged.
Other events on the day included each of the 21 classes taking part in Comic Relief’s Katherine Ryan’s cupcake sweepstake, an after-school bake sale – which alone raised more than £500 – and a movie night, watching the new release Small Foot.
A spokesperson for the school said: “Taking part in Comic Relief gave an opportunity to educate pupils in the poverty that surrounds the world – which had a massive effect on us all, resulting in an enormous response from the schools families and staff to get behind the charity fundraising – a final total is yet to be confirmed but the schools attitude and ability to help will be used to make a difference.”
