Heavy snow showers could make rush hour tomorrow morning interesting – the Met Office’s latest forecast for Wokingham borough suggests that the white stuff will fall overnight and into tomorrow morning.
With temperatures around freezing for much of the day and the heaviest snow forecast to fall from 8am to 10am, roads and railways could be severely affected.
There could also be school closures if staff deem that it is unsafe to get to school.
Earlier today, Thames Valley Police urged drivers not to make unnecessary journeys in the snow – with today being a Sunday, it’s been easier, although it did lead to the cancellation of the Reading Toy Run.
The advice came after the emergency services had to response to several incidents including a number of motorists left stranded in their vehicles on the M40 motorway, the A34 in Oxfordshire and on the A5 in Milton Keynes.
Avoid driving in snow if you can
Chief Inspector Henry Parsons, of the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “The message to motorists is do not travel today unless it is absolutely unavoidable. Do not put your life and the lives of others at risk.
“Many of the roads in the Thames Valley have been blocked and, as temperatures plummet, will become extremely icy and dangerous. Keep up to date with the weather forecasts and advice over the next few days and ensure you can safely complete journeys and, when it is safe to drive, ensure you drive in accordance with the road conditions.”
If you do need to drive, the advice is to ensure you have warm blankets and clothes, an emergency chocolate supply and a shovel in the boot, just in case.
Tomorrow’s snow comes after today’s showers, which arrived just after 7am. While parts of the borough were hit hard, other areas saw precious little snow.
