We ended September with an absolutely excellent speaker.
Her name was Monica Weller and her subject was Ruth Ellis.
Monica began her presentation by telling us how she became the Ghost Writer for Ruth Ellis’s sister – Muriel Jakubait, writing a book about the secret life of Ruth Ellis, the last women to be hanged in Britain.
Monica shared with us just a small portion of her extensive research, much of which had been carried out at the National Archives in Kew.
Her research showed that the defence had made little effort to defend her and there is doubt as to whether she could have handled the gun.
Her extensive research also showed a link with politicians and a web of espionage into which Ruth Ellis had fallen, leading to the conclusion that she had been set up and had all the evidence been produced at her trial, it would have been hard for the jury to have found her “Guilty Without Reasonable Doubt”.
At our first meeting in October, our speaker was Richard Harrison who is Chair of the Reading Citizens Advice Bureau.
He began his talk by giving us a short history of this organisation which provides advice for the problems people face every day and told us that they help approximately 60 people per day.
Recently the club enjoyed an excellent day out at Leeds Castle where we were blessed with good weather. Our next outing is to the Royal Albert Hall Friendship Concert where we will enjoy listening to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
It will soon be time for our Christmas Party which will be held at the Sonning Golf Club. We will enjoy a two-course meal after which we will be entertained by Ray Spiller.
Our next meeting will be held at the Oakwood Centre on Monday, October 28, when our speaker will be Sandine Darmon who will be talking about running a Patisserie.
Visitors are welcome and entrance is £3. which will include tea or coffee.
