WOKINGHAM’S High Steward has announced her intention to retire after 25 years’ service, and she is intending to pass on the honorary role to her daughter. Appointed in 1992, Lady Elizabeth Godsal said that although the post is intended for life, for health reasons she feels that she should step down.
Wokingham has had a High Steward for 400 years and Lady Elizabeth was the first woman in the role. The original High Steward was Sir Henry Neville who was Lady Elizabeth’s nine-times Great Grandfather and a number of descendants from the family have carried out the role.
In a statement issued last week, the Town Council said it is working closely with Lady Elizabeth to discuss the appropriate civic arrangements for a smooth handover. In May, Lady Elizabeth’s daughter, Lucy Zeal, will take over.
A farewell afternoon tea for Lady Elizabeth will be held in April.
Cllr Gwynneth Hewetson, Chair of the town council’s Civic Committee, paid tribute to Lady Elizabeth’s service.
She said: “The High Steward may be a largely ceremonial post but Lady Elizabeth has always demonstrated her love of the town and its residents.
Lady Elizabeth Godsal said: “I have so loved being involved with the town of Wokingham.
“I feel a little sad that I am stepping down from this role but I am confident that the time feels right for me and I look forward to still attending some of the events around the town and keeping abreast of all the positive things the town has to look forward to.”
