TWO support workers have been shortlisted for prestigious awards in their sector.
The duo both work for Wokingham-based group Optalis and will soon find out if they have won at the Learning Disability & Autism Awards when they are held in Birmingham.
The awards aim to celebrate excellence in the support for people with learning disabilities, putting special emphasis on individuals or organisations that excel in providing quality care.
Jonathan Povey is based at the Boyn Grove Learning Disability Day Service in Maidenhead and has been nominated for a Newcomer Award. Having joined Optalis almost a year ago, Jonathan has been praised for the positive impact he’s had on customers.
Victoria Holt, Optalis’ Boyn Grove Learning Disability Day Service Manager, said: “Jonathan has a very calm influence on both staff and customers which makes people feel safe and secure in his company.
“The environment can be quite unpredictable to work in but Jonathan is unflappable which is important as it can help to de-escalate challenging situations.
“One customer in particular has profound and multiple learning disabilities and doesn’t communicate verbally but Jonathan is able to engage her by talking with her gently and holding her hand which can often help her to re-join her sensory session.”
The Newcomer award acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of new members of staff who have only worked in the care sector since January 2016.
Kelly Storey is a finalist in the Support Worker Award category. She works at the Wokingham Learning Disability Day Services and plays a leading role in organising community work with the National Trust. In her nomination, she received high praise for her professionalism and her excellent rapport, not only with their customers but also the parents and carers.
Karyn Fowle, Optalis’ Service Manager for Wokingham Learning Disability Day Service, said: “Kelly is a fantastic role model to other staff members. She willingly shares her knowledge and experience while maintaining her professionalism at all times.
“She recognises the importance of ensuring our customers have representation at local events and groups, and will strongly advocate for someone if required.
“She inspires and motivates and is thoroughly deserving of an award.”
The awards take place at the ICC in Birmingham on Friday, June 28.
