Shinfield restaurant L’Ortolan is one of top 20 UK restaurants

A SHINFIELD restaurant has scooped another accolade to go alongside its Michelin star… it’s one of the country’s top 20 restaurants.

L’Ortolan, which also boasts three AA rosettes and a mention on the AA Notable Wine List, has been placed as number 20 in this year’s The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants list.

The list, announced today, is compiled by The Sunday Times in association with Harden’s – now in its sixth annual edition, and is based on 63,000 reviews from almost 7,000 diners.

The overall winner is Sat Bains in Nottingham and serves modern British cuisine. It has featured on the respected list since the inaugural edition. It was at number 13 in 2010, 21st in 2012 and tenth in 2013.

Second place Midsummer House in Cambridge has moved up from 21st place last year, while L’Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria retains its third spot.

The Waterside Inn in Bray is at 15th place (last year 10) and is Berkshire’s highest rated restaurant, however, L’Ortolan’s 20th place is Wokingham borough’s best restaurant. It has moved up 26 places over last year – it was ranked 46th in the 2014 survey.

For the survey, The Sunday Times a total of 16 different cuisines are served across the 100 restaurants, with modern British accounting for 48. The others available include classic French, Italian, Scottish, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Scandinavian and Basque.

Editor of The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants, Karen Robinson, said: “Congratulations to every restaurant on the list. We compile the top 100 by combining the reviews and opinions of thousands of diners, which proves that any for restaurant to be included, it must deliver consistently excellent food and service.”

The full top 100, including rankings and an overall score is in today’s edition of The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants.

The prices quoted in The Top 100 Restaurants are for the typical cost, per person, of a three-course dinner with half a bottle of house wine, coffee, service and VAT.

The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants is the first in a three week series of guides celebrating the best places to dine in Britain. This weekend’s Top 100 Restaurants guide will be followed by four days of top places to eat in The Times, including the coolest new restaurants, best new restaurants and fantastic pub food. On Sunday November 15 The Sunday Times will publish its “cheap eats”: the best restaurants for under £20 a head. The series is completed on Sunday 22 November with The Sunday Times looking at the best food from a host of global cuisines; around the world in 80 restaurants without leaving the UK.
