Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Norman Jorgensen, writes for you …
School’s out, and I’m sure many parents will be looking forward to the summer holidays and its many days of barbecue weather!
Across the course of the year, we’ve been working to build and upgrade our facilities and to prepare events for you to enjoy over the summer.
So, if you’re scratching your head, thinking of things to keep your kids occupied for the next few weeks, here are just some of the things on offer from the Borough Council:
The new tennis courts at Cantley Park in Wokingham opened a few weeks ago – great if your children have picked up Wimbledon fever
- If you fancy a day at the park, try one of our nine new nature parks in Arborfield, Finchampstead, Shinfield and Wokingham
- Training for an event or want to enjoy a wild swim? Try open water swimming at Dinton Pastures every Wednesday
- Maybe you’re looking to learn new skills and give something back to the community? Loddon Valley Leisure Centre in Earley will be running Lifeguard Qualification Courses throughout August and September
Leisure centres across the Borough will be open every day for swimming, sports or children’s activities.
If we get a proper British summer – i.e. weeks and weeks of endless rain – the Council has plenty of things to do indoors:
- Children aged four to 12 can learn about animals from the rainforest as part of Rainforest Discovery at Maiden Erlegh library on August 8.
- Do your children have a creative ‘bug’? Then bring them to Twyford Library on August 21 to make plasticine bugs and insects
- If you’re constantly being nagged about getting a dog, then Woodley Library is running a session on August 10 on how to look after your dog, with stories and colouring-in for children aged four to 11.
And when September finally rolls round and it’s time to get them back to school, Wokingham Library will be running a Back to School Relax Kids Taster for children aged eight to 12 on September 4.
So, as you can see, there’s lots to do in Wokingham Borough this summer. For more details and a full list of our events, please visit the What’s On Guide on our website wokingham.gov.uk
I wish you all a really pleasant and relaxing summer.
