Motorists are being warned of delays on the M4 until mid-afternoon today after a car transporter caught fire.
The incident took place around 9.21am this morning on the westbound carriageway between junctions 16 and 17.
As a result, the carriageway is currently closed.
Now, Highways England is urging drivers heading west to allow extra time for the journey, especially if they are heading between Swindon and Chippenham earlier today.
HGVs are currently being diverted via junction 15, while all other traffic is being diverted off junction 16 via local roads.
Highways England and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are working hard to reopen the westbound carriageway as soon as it safe to do so, and lane 3 is expected to be opened to release traffic past the scene of the incident.
The car transporter was full of cars at the time of the incident.
For safety reasons the eastbound carriageway was also closed due to thick smoke and traffic, but was reopened at 10.40am.
