It may well be the third Thursday of the month when this column was published in The Wokingham Paper, but it’s also the first Thursday since Wales won the Grand Slam, what a game!
We had gone to Amsterdam and Utrecht for my birthday so drove back with the radio on and it wasn’t until we got to Calais that we watched the final minutes on the screens, oh yes indeed, we certainly roared with delight.
We then listened to the England v Ireland game which was unbelievable, talk about a game of two halves.
Oh well, that’s the Six Nations over for another year … though the conversations will continue for years.
It doesn’t always rain
With this year being Visit Wales’ Year of Discovery and the removal of the tolls on the bridges I was interested to read that visitor numbers have increased, people will also be delighted to know that it doesn’t always rain!
I spoke to someone who said “it always rains in Wales” and when I asked where and when they had been, they replied that they had not been they just heard it always rains in Wales.
Sun-kissed and healthy
We always have great weather in New Quay (Ceredigion, not Cornwall) and return home looking sun kissed and healthy, having enjoyed days at the beach, watching the dolphins at the harbour, boat trips and evenings at the local brewery or in the garden.
Equally the day of the an annual event I organise in Crickhowell in May was one of the hottest days of 2018 and Green Man Festival last year had fantastic weather, if you’re going to Wales let me know and I can put a word in to Siân Lloyd, Ruth Wignall and Derek the Weather.
Sugar-free weaning
Of course, our trips to the beach will have considerably less ice cream this year as I am sugar free, granted I am not as strict as I was when I began and am now eating sourdough but I feel like my food memory has been erased and I am now on a weaning phase, which is no bad thing.
I have been asked if I miss or crave anything and the simple answer is no.
I also miss nothing about being unwell, aching, overweight, unfit, constantly exhausted and being downright miserable. I have been asked what happens when I eat normally?
Well what I am eating is now my normal, as it has been all the way through.
I have not done this by doing a fad, eating snake juice or powders, the only replacement I have made is swede and celeriac instead of potato, I have weighed and measured nothing all I have done is identified which foods make me unwell and avoided them.
The big 5-0
I turned 50 at the weekend and I have to admit I was expecting some kind of massive explosion as I was catapulted into the next age bracket but it never happened.
My birthday wish list this year was very short and simple – Wales to win the Six Nations, see I am so easily pleased.
When asked why I get so excited about my birthday I simply say it’s a privilege to celebrate another year. If it’s your birthday this week then I wish you many happy returns.
