THE NEW mayor of Wokingham Borough Council, Cllr Bill Soane, said that his charity of the year would be Crowthorne-based Debra.
In his first speech as mayor, the Woodley-based councillor thanked the chamber for their support.
“Thank you for electing me,” he said. “And a welcome to the new members to the chamber.
“I;d like to congratulate our outgoing mayor [Cllr John Kaiser] for raising such a large sum for his charity of the year.”
He also praised Cllr Kaiser for his support over the past year.
“My chosen charity for this year is Debra. There are two representatives here tonight.”
He said that the charity is dedicated to curing a skin condition called epidermolysis bullosa and the charity might be based locally but works internationally.
Cllr Soane then appointed his deputy, nominating Cllr Malcolm Richards for the role.
Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Lindsay Ferris seconded the motion, praising Cllr Richards.
“The whole Lib Dem group welcome you,” he said, adding that he felt he was a fair politician in the various groups he was involved in.
The vote was passed unanimously.
