National newspapers are implying that local MP Theresa May will stands to become leader of the Conservative Party.
Several front pages of tomorrow’s papers lead with the news that Mrs May will put herself forward for the contest before nominations close at noon tomorrow.
The Independent’s new digital edition says that the Home Secretary and Maidenhead MP will offer an “olive brand to win over Brexiteers” and will “hand the job of ‘Secretary of State for Brexit’ to an MP who campaigned to leave the EU.”
The Times headline says that Mrs May will “reunite Britain” and “vows to heal division in Tory leadership bid”.
Writing inside, the paper promises that she will be a One Nation candidate, adding that she will build a country that “works not for a privileged few but for everyone, regardless of who they are and regardless of where they’re from”.
The Guardian suggests that Mrs May will make a speech at 9.30am tomorrow morning to set out her pitch to the Conservative MPs who will vote for her.
The paper quotes her position as: “The job now is about uniting the party, uniting the country and negotiating the best possible deal for Britain.”
Mrs May is thought to be standing against former Henley MP Boris Johnson, Stephen Crabb, John Baron, Liam Fox, Nicky Morgan and Jeremy Hunt.
Nominations close at noon on Thursday, June 30 and the winner is to be announced in early September.
