Well, that time is upon us. The days are getting shorter, and the pumpkins are creeping into the supermarkets.
Autumn is here. So now is a good time to think about ‘winterising’ your bike.
Give the bike a good check over. Check headset bearings, by lifting the front wheel up, and turning the handlebars. Rough or notchy bearings are going to need replacing.
Do the same with the wheel bearings, to see if they’re running rough, or have any sideways play. If so, they will need adjusting.
Once the weather gets colder and damper, all those issues will get worse very quickly.
Next, give the bike a good clean.
This will help identify any issues with the bike. Such as brake pads that have worn low.
Check the brakes, to make sure they are working correctly.
If they feel stiff to activate, then the cable may well be starting to corrode, and needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Gear cables should be running smoothly.
Top Tip put some grease where the cables run under the bottom bracket. This helps lubricate them, and also keeps moisture from sitting on the cables, causing corrosion. Think about periodical gear services to keep the gears running smoothly, and quietly.
They will also last much longer!
Check the tyres.
Are they worn or cracked? If so you will need to replace them. Think about changing your summer tyres, to something more suitable for winter riding.
A wider tyre (if it fits in the frame) with some tread pattern helps stability on colder road surfaces. Something with a puncture protection strip, will hopefully stop those cold roadside repair stops.
Mudguards may not be the most stylish accessory to fit to your bike but finishing your ride without wet feet, or a wet bottom is worth the sacrifice.
These days there are plenty of mudguards to fit any bike. And don’t forget to wrap yourself up warmer, too.
With these steps in place, you can get the most out of your winter riding. If you need any help or advice, just get in touch with me at the Cycle Works.
