The Wokingham blogger behind popular Facebook page and blog Plastic Free Home, David Lamont, is urging those in the Borough to recycle more by taking advantage of schemes run by Terracycle and other organisations.
“At Plastic Free Home we believe that the ultimate answer is to eliminate all single use waste as soon as possible and to reduce our overall consumption dramatically, whether products are recyclable or not,” he explains.
“Everyday items are placed in the bin, and quite likely then in landfill, that could be meaningfully recycled. In 2016 the UK generated 222.9 million tonnes of waste, with over 50 tonnes being placed in landfill.
Mr Lamont added that everyone can do more, at home, in the workplace, at their children’s school or through local clubs and amenities.
“We urge local businesses and residents, and indeed Wokingham Borough Council, to do more. Why not start by familiarising yourself with the many free recycling schemes run by Terracycle, for items ranging from crisp packets through to contact lenses, baby food pouches, cleaning products, bread bags and cigarettes?
“In some cases, your business or a school or local amenity you have links with may be able to host collection points.
“Also take a look at Terracycle’s Zero Waste Boxes. You buy a box, can place almost anything that’s harder to recycle in it and send it back via UPS as part of the package. They aren’t inexpensive but it is a great option and the cost could be shared between family, friends, neighbours or by an employer.”
