POLICE have teamed up with Wokingham Town Council in a bid to catch graffiti artists.
The two groups are working together to identify the vandals who have been tagging the town centre, costing businesses money.
And the town council said that it wanted to thanks Scottish and Southern Power Distribution, Marks & Spencer and M&Co for promptly removing some eyesores that have blighted their Wokingham properties.
The Town Council said that, along with the Rose Street Residents Association, they approached each of the businesses to draw their attention to the offending graffiti, which had covered a significant proportion of the buildings. The tags have been painted over.
The vandalism, the town council added, spoils the town for residents and visitors as well as costing substantial sums of money for businesses to remove the offending paintwork.
In a bid to tackle the issue, the Town Council said it is working closely with Thames Valley Police to identify and catch the perpetrators. Alongside, this the council and police have begun a joint project to take the anti-graffiti message into local schools.
Cllr Nick Campbell-White, Chairman of the Town Council’s Amenities Committee, said: ‘The town council, understandably, receives regular complaints from residents and businesses when their neighbourhoods and premises are attacked with graffiti.
“We are working very hard with Wokingham police to deal with this growing problem. Over the coming weeks and months we will develop the educational programme we expect to roll-out to local schools.
“We are extremely grateful to SSE, M&Co and Marks & Spencer for their prompt remedial action to improve the environment for everyone.”
