Cathy and Peter have moved out of the big city, and into an idyllic nightmare.
Cathy has been bullied into managing the Midsomer Wallop Cake Club’s stall at the village fete, while her arch nemesis Rosemary steals all the glory.
At her wits’ end, Cathy makes the decision to leave – leave the fete, leave Midsomer Wallop, and leave Peter.
But catastrophe after catastrophe prevents her from making her escape, and when handsome stranger JT arrives to only complicate matters further, Cathy is thrown into complete disarray.
Will she run away with JT? Will Rosemary win the cake competition with her prized Victoria sponge? Or will Cathy have a change of heart?
A laugh-a-minute farce, Tempting Fete has all the hallmarks of a typical Carry On-esque comedy. From saucy one-liners to trouser-dropping slapstick, the mile-a-minute action keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.
Lydia Vas Nunes’ Cathy is feisty yet amiable, and the audience really gets behind her, but they also feel for Peter, played by Adam Wells, the downtrodden husband who really will do anything for the woman he loves.
Battleaxe Rosemary, played brilliantly by Sandra Miall, is every villager’s nightmare: boisterous, demanding and ready to snap up any credit going, she and husband Randal (Brian Nixey) provide some of the biggest laughs of the show.
Of course you couldn’t have a village fete without a naughty Reverend (Simon Trinder), a blundering policeman (Ethan Law) and the tipsy farmer (Jim Ewan), all of whom provided several moments of comedy gold.
With macaroons flying through the air, bunting draped in places it most certainly shouldn’t be draped, and all manner of clothes-swapping going on, the show is certainly racy, fast-paced and addictive to watch.
Tempting Fete is light and breezy, full of silliness and mayhem and the perfect antidote to all the seriousness around at the moment.
Tempting Fete is showing until Saturday, June 10 (except Thursday as the theatre is used as a polling station). Tickets are £8, with discounts available for concessions. To book visit www.shinfieldplayers.org.uk.
