SHARE the cost with a neighbour is the message about the Council’s garden waste collection scheme.
Applications for the new year of the scheme are now open. Residents signing up receive a brown wheelie bin which is collected fortnightly on bin day.
The scheme costs £60 per year and the councillor responsible for the environment suggested that this fee could be shared by good neighbours.
Cllr Angus Ross, executive member for environment, said: “You can share a bin with a neighbour to help with costs, if you wish. This is another example of the flexibility of this service – it can be tailored to your needs.”
On payment, the resident is sent a sticker to display on their brown bin, so that the council’s refuse collectors know they are part of the scheme.
Alternatives to the brown bins are 75-litre compostable sacks which are collected at the same time as a brown bin. Costing £1 each, they are available to purchase from council offices and libraries.
So far, the Council says, more than 15,500 households have signed up to the scheme.
Those who don’t want to continue can ignore the invoice being sent out – the council said that the bin will not be taken away, unless specifically requested, as the cost of removing it is more than the cost of the bin.
Cllr Ross added: “I’d like to thank all 15,500 households who have already signed-up to the borough council’s garden waste wheeled-bin service. Anyone who isn’t part of the scheme, but would like to be, can visit our website to sign-up ahead of April 1.”
