A NEW booklet that recalls the day cup fever came to Wokingham has been launched by The Wokingham Society.
On November 20, 1982, Wokingham Town FC played in the FA Cup’s first round against the then third division (now league two). It remains the only time that the club has reached the first round proper of the cup and the tie took place in its old ground in Finchampstead Road, which has since been converted into housing.
The match was drawn, forcing a replay which the Sumas then lost.
Wokingham Society committee member Kevin Lenton was there that day and has written an account of the match, together with a short history of the club, the replay at Cardiff and what has happened to Wokingham FC since then.
It includes material from the official Match Day programme, press reports and personal reminiscences.
Mr Lenton said: “This was a day when the magic of the FA Cup came to Wokingham, bringing dreams of glory and giant killing. The draw against a side that five years earlier had taken place in the European Cup Winners Cup was a magnificent achievement.”
Wokingham Society Chairman Peter Must said: “We are proud to make available again this moment from 35 years ago when the town brought itself to the attention of the footballing nation and we hope that it will spark renewed interest in what is now Wokingham & Embrook Football Club and its exploits in the Hellenic Football League.”
