WALKING football is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the country and is one that Wokingham & Emmbrook have excelled in with one of the most successful teams in the country.
Wokingham & Emmbrook have recently added to trophies to their illustrious collection having won the ‘One Tournament’ last weekend having already triumphed as league winners in the Spring Season Premier League.
They defeated Watford, Wimbledon, Mansfield Town and Northampton Town last weekend on their way to being crowned as the ‘One Tournament’ champions which was hosted at England’s St George’s Park.
The team flexed their dominance and defensive prowess as they remarkably avoided conceding a single goal on the day as they recorded four separate 1-0 wins, including a single goal success against Stamford in the final.
The team competes in the Thames Valley League Premier League, the highest of the four divisions, where two seasons run, firstly from March-June and then again in August-November.
The Sumas will also continue their defence of the Thames Valley League Cup on July 14 having won the competition and will be bidding to win the WFA National Cup where they will face Wimbledon FC away from home in a second round tie next Thursday.
“We are hoping to win the WFA National Cup, Thames Valley League Cup and the Autumn League to do the treble for the first time,” said Wokingham & Emmbrook player Mike Allpress.
“The WFA National Cup is really tough with very strong northern teams including Manchester City, Birmingham City and Leeds United but if we can do it then we will have a clean sweep of winning every available competition in the country.
“It might be too much of an ask to win all of the competitions, but the fact that a Wokingham team, the core of which is a St Crispins school team from 1976-1981, is even in the position of possibly dominating an entire football category is incredible.
The teams accolades haven’t gone unnoticed with their players being recognised by the national side.
“We have several players trialling for the England team in the coming months who are currently one of the five national regional squads run by the Walking Football Association.”
