A man who staged a rooftop protest is in critical condition in hospital today – and the police force on duty has referred itself to the complaints board over the incident.
Late on Tuesday evening the man climbed the roof of a home in Church Road, Earley, and stayed there for much of Wednesday.
Thames Valley Police report that he was taken to hospital around 6.30pm on Wednesday evening – not long after it started raining – after the man had been on the roof for 19 hours.
He sustained injuries coming down and is in a critical but stable condition.
Now, Thames Valley Police has said that it will refer itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) in connection with the incident, which it says is a fear for welfare case. The Force is making the referral as a mandatory requirement.
It is not known why the man climbed the roof and police have not said how he came down.
