VOICE OF WOKINGHAM: The heat is on, now we must take action

IN CASE you hadn’t noticed, it ain’t half hot mum.

Over the past few years, we have seen some extreme weather. The Beast from the East, last year’s incredibly hot summer and just this year a very dry July.

We are only just waking up to the problem that climate emergency is causing, but aid agencies have been warning of the issues other countries have been facing for more than 15 years now.

The problems of single-use plastic have been there for years.

Some of us have been buying ethically for years – even back in the day when fairly traded coffee tasted vile and ethical fashion was a contradiction in terms.

The world is cottoning on.

Our Plastic Free Life column is a great example of how ethical living, with a smaller carbon footprint, is becoming mainstream and we can all make simple swaps to improve our lives.

Thursday’s motion was a landmark for the borough.

Announcing solar panels for schools is a no-brainer.

But there will be more to do.

We all have a part to play in it.

We will be monitoring the work of the cross-party panel closely, and looking for ways in which we can all make our borough greener. It’s not just for us, it’s for our children’s children too.
