Sir John Redwood has responded to a new opinion poll showing that Dr Phillip Lee could be running him close in the forthcoming General Election.
Last night, Survation released the poll which suggested that while 42% of people were backing the veteran Conservative candidate, 38% would be happy to vote for the new Lib Dem candidate for Wokingham, Dr Phillip Lee.
This means that support for Sir John has slumped by 15%, while the Lib Dems have seen a surge – in the 2017 General Election, they were pushed into third place by Labour.
Dr Phillip Lee has issued a statement saying that the poll confirmed what he was hearing on the doorsteps.
“Any voters are telling us they have been lifelong Conservatives but can no longer support a party that, with John Redwood’s enthusiastic support, Boris Johnson is moving away from its previous core values of decency and tolerance,” he said.
The Wokingham Paper contacted Sir John to ask his views on the poll.
He said: “I am happy to talk about what I have done and wish to do if re-elected. I am putting out plenty of material on johnredwood.com”.
