The finishing touches are being put on an ambitious expansion plan at London Waterloo station. And, all being well, tomorrow morning Wokingham Borough commuters will get to see it in action.
During August, Waterloo has been running at reduced capacity to allow work to extend the station to take place.
It is one of the busiest stations in the country.
Now the final preparations are being made to ensure the station is ready for commuters heading back to work after the bank holiday weekend.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Work on one of the biggest and most complex engineering projects ever undertaken at Waterloo station is on track, as we enter the final few hours of lengthening and straightening platforms. We expect the station to be fully reopened tomorrow morning for our passengers.
“1,000 engineers and trackside staff having worked shifts 24 hours a day for the last three and a half weeks to increase capacity at Waterloo by 30% at morning and afternoon peaks from the end of next year.
“The next few hours will be a crucial part of the programme as all the new signalling is switched on and tested. We will be keeping passengers updated on progress of the works through tonight and into the morning.
“The work will benefit the many millions of passengers who use the station, for decades to come, turning Waterloo into a transport hub for the 21st century.”
