ONE of the borough’s four MPs has lost a significant vote in the House of Commons this evening over the European Union.
Maidenhead MP Theresa May – whose constituency includes Sonning, Twyford, Remenham and Wargrave – had attempted to bring a motion to the House of Commons that would result in the UK leaving the EU, a process known as Brexit.
Mrs May, who has been Prime Minister since the 2016 referendum on whether we should stay in the European Union or not.
The vote was the biggest ever defeat in the House of Commons for a Government – 432 against, 202 in favour, giving the opposition a majority of 230.
Wokingham MP John Redwood, Reading East MP Matt Rodda and Bracknell MP Dr Phillip Lee are all expected to have voted against the Government.
Immediately after the vote, the leader of the opposition, Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn called for a vote of no confidence in Mrs May’s Government which will be debated by Parliament tomorrow.
If Labour wins this vote, Mrs May will have to resign as Prime Minister.
