SO NEAR, yet so far.
The competition, on Saturday, June 15, began with the team Captain receiving it’s trophy for being named the best in the South Central of England after beating Croydon in the Regionals Final, once presented the competition kicked off.
The Wokingham District Girls put in an excellent display and represented the association brilliantly. Their group games involved a tight goalless draw against Telford, an outstanding battle to claim a 1-1 draw with a wonder goal against Chester and an unfortunate loss to an incredible Bexley, sadly these results meant that their aspirations of being National Champions had gone.
However, the girls delivered a stunning performance with a consolation trophy on the line as they racked up a 4-0 win with a tremendous team display against Newcastle in the semi-final.
The Final saw Wokingham play a familiar opponent in the form of Thurrock, who they had already beaten twice this season. The final game for the girls was a tight one with chances falling to both teams in normal game time but the game ended in a stalemate at the end and the game had to be decided on penalties.
Wokingham were beaten on penalties as they endured a cruel end to what has been a phenomenal season of games.
“The sixth best District Girls Team in the Country is still an outstanding achievement and as well as this we end our season also as South East Area Champions,” said team manager Ethan Greene.
“For the first ever Wokingham District Girls Team a marker has been laid down for all those that follow, it’s been an incredible season where we’ve achieved far more than we could ever have imagined.
“A massive thank you to all those that have been involved in the team from the supporters to the coaches, the association to the sponsors; these girls have shown what Wokingham are made of and the talent that lay within our district, we salute as they depart to their new season ventures and end by saying how proud the girls have made us this season and how proud they should be of themselves.
“We look forward to welcoming the new batch of Wokingham District Girl hopefuls to our trials on Saturday, July 6.”
