A WOKINGHAM fitness club has lost a lot of weight over the past month: 1,070lbs to be precise.
That’s the volume in weight of food that members of Curves donated to the Wokingham Food Bank during March.
This is the 14th year that members of the women-only gym have taken part in the food drive.
Each time they visited the Denton Road placed centre, they were asked to bring some non-perishable foods that could be given to the cause.
Each donation will then be packaged up by the food bank, which is based off Broad Street, to become a three-day parcel of emergency food to those who desperately need it. And with demand increasing, the donation is timely.
Bev Gallard, the owner of Curves Wokingham, said: “Our members’ generosity is a true reflection of the Curves spirit and community.
“We are thrilled with the outstanding effort from our members and friends of Curves. We can always count on our members to help support Curves Wokingham which is truly amazing.”
And Bev wanted to pay special tribute to those who had made significant donations.
She said: “A big thank you to Helen, a member of Curves since 2013 who bought in a massive 57lbs in weight of food, followed closely by Lucia at 55lbs and Brenda at 33lbs.
“A big thank you to Tesco and Waitrose in Wokingham for the loan of one of their shopping trolleys. It stood in the circuit so everyone could see the amount of food we collected.”
Bev also had appreciation for her next-door neighbours: “We would also like to say a BIG thank the Firemen next door for helping us bag up the goodies and take them to the Food Bank.
“New Curves members also contributed to the Food Drive through a special promotion which allowed them to join for a bag of donated food, instead of paying the regular joining fee.”
