As Wokingham borough freezes, around 1,400 homes are without power today after a substation fire.
Areas affected include parts of Wokingham, Barkham and Finchampstead – postcodes in the RG41. The code given by SSE is EC5758.
The substation affected is in The Lilacs, Barkham.
A resident told The Wokingham Paper: “The substation has exploded causing the electricity and heating to go off!”
Firecrews and engineers from SSE are on site and it is hoped that power will be restored by 3.30pm. Because of the cold weather, it is expected that vans serving hot food and drinks will soon arrive to affected streets.
A spokesperson for SSE told The Wokingham Paper: “At the moment we have 1,400 customers affected in parts of Wokingham, Barkham and Finchampstead.
“The power went off just after 9.25am due to a fault at a local substation.
“Staff are on site and we hope to get power back by 3.30pm today. Looking at the conditions, we’re hoping to get hot food and drink vehicles to the area.
“We apologise to all customers affected. Our engineers are doing everything they can to get power back on as quickly and safely as possible.”
