A WOMAN has died following a flat fire in Woodley last night.
The woman, believed to be in her eighties, was pulled from the fire in Woodlands Court, a sheltered housing property, in Norwich Drive shortly after 10pm last night.
She was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading with life-threatening injuries, but sadly passed away this morning.
Crews from Wokingham Road, Caversham Road, Whitley Wood and Dee Road were called out to the scene at approximately 21:51 last night having received reports the property was ablaze.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a hose reel spent more than an hour at the scene.
They were joined at the incident by two ambulance crews, an ambulance officer and a doctor.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated, but a spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said it is not believed to be suspicious.
A spokesperson for Reading Borough Council, which manages the property, said: “A female tenant at Woodlands Court sheltered housing unit was taken to hospital last night (Tuesday 27th October) following a fire in her home and has since sadly died.
“No other tenants were injured in the fire which was contained to one unit.
“We would like to thank the emergency services for their prompt response and our thoughts and sympathies are with the family of the victim.
“Obviously it is too early to comment on the causes of the fire but we will be working closely with the emergency services to establish what happened and to ensure that other residents in the block are safe in their homes.”
A file is being prepared for the coroner.
