Natasha Master, a new recruit at Woodley United Ladies, has pledged to shave her head as a fundraiser for Cancer Research, a charity which has had a major impact on her life following her father’s cancer diagnosis in 2006.
Also known as Tatty, Natasha will shave her head tomorrow (January 3) with all proceeds going to the charity which has supported the family during and since the cancer.
“The money raised for the charity is used to fund clinical trials, which bring new cancer treatments to patients that may be out of other options,” she said.
“The money also funds the scientists working in the labs, behind the scenes, who have dedicated a large portion of their lives to helping solve the mystery that is this disease.”
With her father now being cancer free for 11 years, Natasha has made a courageous step to give back to the charity that played a vital role in saving her father’s life.
“In 2006 my Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma. I was fairly young at the time but me and my Dad have always been close and despite not fully understanding what was going on I still remember his absence and the emotions that came with the whole situation.
“Although my dad himself never lost his hair from chemo, many others do, and it’s not the only thing cancer takes from a person.
“That’s what I’m trying to get across really, that the outside appearance of having no hair doesn’t even compare to the inside battle a person with the cancer is going through.”
She has received plenty of backing from her teammates at United, who are more than happy to help with the fundraising. When asked if she could see any members of the team joining her for the head shave, she cited defender Ruth Pearson, claiming she’s “a bit of a nutter”.
Tatty has nearly doubled her initial fundraising target of £1,000, and she is encouraging people to support this fantastic charity, with no donation too small.
